A Low Cost Patent and Trademark Clinic for the Inventor

ABSTRACT

The University of Connecticut School of Law’s Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship Law Clinic (“IP Clinic”) opened its doors in January 2007. The IP Clinic is an instructional program for law students working under the supervision of attorneys. It has assisted (or is presently assisting) more than 290 clients, hailing from all eight counties in Connecticut and representing more than 85 different cities and towns. The Director of the IP Clinic is Joseph DeGirolamo, a USPTO-registered patent attorney and a former partner at Morgan & Finnegan, LLP in New York City where he concentrated on complex patent litigation with an emphasis on matters involving mechanical and medical devices, various consumer products, and pharmaceutical and chemical compositions.

The IP Clinic’s students and supervising attorneys are involved in various aspects of client matters, including but not limited to, conducting client interviews, performing legal research, drafting documents, and interacting with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on both patent and trademark matters. The IP Clinic has advised clients regarding numerous legal issues, and routinely conducts patent searches and trademark clearances, and prepares and prosecutes both patent and trademark applications.

To be eligible to receive the services of the IP Clinic you must request, complete and submit an application and satisfy certain acceptance criteria.
